Polar Bear

I stomp and lurk
Around my flat
Like a wild animal
Disgusted at what one has to do
Simply to survive

Eating, scowling, sniffing, hating
Hunting
Looking for ways
To keep me amused
To keep me strong
To keep me from going totally mad
To make it all
Worth while

Inspiration

September
In an old steelworks
Krakow, Poland
On a wet, cold Sunday night

Kraftwerk come on stage
And hypnotise me
Their quality
Their class
Their originality
Their madness
The absurdity of it all

I studied the only
Original member left
Well into his sixties
Standing cool and focused
As if nothing could phase him
I had read a bit about him -
He lived with his sister for 40 years
No children
The only things he cared about
Were cycling and electronic music
He knew the world was full
Of short-term rubbish
And cheap gimmicks

Well into his sixties
But acting as if a teenager
Modern society would label him
A fool, ridiculous
But I thought he was great
And what he stood for
Even greater

The First Snowflake of Winter

December
In the departure lounge
Of a small East African airport
I sat opposite a black woman
And her two children –
A young boy whom she carried
And a lovely, smiling, little girl of around 8-9 years old

They looked like a normal family
Until I noticed
The little girl only had a 6 inch stump
For a left arm
A victim, I presumed
Of the often unreported horrific wars
In Africa
Where murder, mutilation, limb-severing and rape
Go unpunished amongst the lawlessness
My heart sank for the little girl

And when she started to dance
A dance that required her to
Clap her hands
I had to go to the souvenir shop
To stop myself from breaking down

Bubbles in Deep Water

The ship sank
In cold deep waters
On a calm sea

You survived easily
You had it all planned out
Your lifeboat was ready
Fully equipped and warm
Its course already set
To take you to the shore
To your safety
To your comfort zone
To your peace of mind
To your luxury

I had no chance
In this unequal relationship
As my body and soul drowned
Cold and disconnected
Helpless

And on the cold
Dark seabed
As the sea monsters
And sharks
That are thoughts
And memories
Threaten and torture me
Giving me no peace
My attempts to resurface
Seem meaningless and futile

But I am not alone
There are lots of drowned people
Down here
Floating in their own lonely bubbles
Waiting, hoping
To be rescued soon

A Meeting

The Scottish boy
And the Philippine girl
Sat in the coffee shop
They had known each other
For a few years
She loved him
More than he loved her
But he liked her
She was young and wild
She made him laugh
Amongst other things

Her problem was
She was not a UK citizen
And her financial management skills
Were non-existent
And at this coffee meeting
She was out of work
No income
No social security
No safety net
Basically living on her wits
But she kind of
Took it in her stride
As if it was normal
And it did not stop her from smiling

“Frank, can you give me £100 please?”
“Why? I gave you £100 last month”
“I know but I have rent to pay, food to buy
Plus travel expenses”
“Do you think I have a tree that grows money?”
“You have a good job and a house.
You have everything.
You are a millionaire.
I have nothing”
“Are you trying to get a job?”
“Everyday I go on the internet
I go to the Job Centre
I go to interviews
It’s always the same shit.
And I’m behind with my rent.”
“Really?”
“My Landlord says he is going to kick me out
Unless I give him some money soon”
“Where will you live if he kicks you out?”
“I don’t know,” she said giggling
“I’m glad you can laugh,” he said
She looked into his eyes
And laughed
“I have to laugh
My situation is so bad
If I cry I won’t be able to stop.”
What a wonderful spirit she had
Somewhere inside of her

He took out his wallet…
